Biography

Samuel Hunter (b. 1988) is a Junior composition student at Furman University in Greenville, SC, currently in pursuit of his Bachelors of Music degree in Composition.  Samuel began composing in the summer of 2004, during his time at the North Carolina Governor’s School.  Since that point, his music has been performed by church and professional choirs around the Asheville area and in New York City, with future performances by the Chancel Choir of Furman University and members of the Furman Singers.

He currently studies under renowned composer Mark Kilstofte, winner of the Rome Prize, the ASCAP Rudolf Nissim Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship, among other awards, and Daniel Koppelman, a renowned pianist and electro-acoustic composer and performer both solo and as a member of Duo Runedako, graduate of the University of California at San Diego, and winner of two Fulbright grants to tour in and around Odessa, Ukraine.

Samuel has received commissions from the Furman University Chancel Choir, the Cathedral Choir of the Cathedral of All Souls in Biltmore, NC, and is the recipient of an honorable mention in the nationally-renowned 2006 Chanticleer Student Composition Contest, and has been a member of ASCAP since 2006.  In addition to frequent performances at Furman, Samuel was named the 2010-11 Presser Scholar for his achievement and potential.  Samuel owns and operates Dissonant-Harmony Press, an independent sheet music publishing company that publishes his works and the works of other student composers.
